Why Clock Time Is Not Solar Time

The BaZi hour pillar is defined by the sun's position: noon should be the moment the sun is highest. Modern clocks, however, use standard time zones, where every location in a zone shares one time. This introduces two sources of error:

  1. Longitude offset — each time zone is anchored to a reference meridian (e.g. UTC+8 uses 120°E). Every degree of longitude away from that meridian shifts real solar time by 4 minutes.
  2. Equation of time — Earth's orbit is elliptical and its axis is tilted, so solar days vary in length through the year. Clock time and solar time drift apart by roughly −14 to +16 minutes depending on the date.

The Calculation

True Solar Time = standard time + longitude correction + equation of time

Example: someone born in Ürümqi (about 87.6°E) where clocks follow Beijing time (anchored to 120°E). The longitude correction is (87.6 − 120) × 4 ≈ −130 minutes, plus the equation of time for that date. When the clock reads 14:00, True Solar Time may still be before 12:00 — producing a completely different hour pillar.

Impact on the Hour Pillar

BaZi divides the day into twelve two-hour periods. If a birth falls near a boundary (e.g. 12:50, close to the 13:00 boundary between the Wu and Wei hours), a correction of a few dozen minutes can change the hour pillar — and with it the hour-pillar Ten God and children-palace reading.
