BaZi is a Chinese analytical system that converts your birth year, month, day and hour into eight characters (four stem–branch pairs) used to analyze temperament tendencies and time cycles.
BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, converts a birth date and time into four pillars — year, month, day and hour — of two characters each. This article explains the chart structure, how a chart is constructed, and what BaZi analysis can and cannot answer.
BaZi, formally known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional Chinese time-analysis system. It converts a person's birth moment into four stem–branch pairs:

Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch — eight characters in total, hence "BaZi" (eight characters).
The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar is called the Day Master. It represents the chart owner. All further analysis is anchored to it: the elemental relationships between the Day Master and the other seven characters determine the Ten Gods, strength assessment, and the Useful God.
Three inputs are required:
The month pillar changes at solar-term boundaries, not lunar months. The day pillar follows the perpetual calendar. People born in the same two-hour period share the same eight characters, though luck-cycle starting points differ by gender and year-stem polarity.

Western astrology is based on planetary positions in zodiac signs; BaZi is based on the Chinese calendar's stem–branch cycle and Five Element relationships. The frameworks, inputs and vocabulary are entirely different.
A partial chart (year, month and day pillars — six characters) still supports basic analysis, but hour-pillar information such as the children palace and later-life indications will be missing.
Twins born in the same two-hour period share the same chart, but BaZi describes tendencies and cycles rather than fixed outcomes. Environment, choices and effort lead to different life paths.
